The parts of an awning

Every quote we send names these parts. Knowing them is how you compare two quotes properly.

  1. Roof panel — laminated glass, 4 mm PVDF ACP or PU metal. The quote must state thickness and coating
  2. Primary beam — the aluminium or galvanised steel member carrying the roof, fixed to the wall or to posts
  3. Wall bracket and flashing — bolted into the wall with chemical anchors, flashing chased into the wall then sealed
  4. Fall — at least 5° slope away from the house so water runs to the front
  5. Concealed gutter — a box gutter inside the front fascia, so there is no exposed half-round pipe
  6. Posts with hidden downpipe — at least two slim posts at the front corners, downpipe running inside one of them to the drain
  7. Underside — on glass it is the glass itself; under an ACP roof an aluminium strip ceiling hides the frame and gives a finished soffit
  8. Lighting point — downlights or a fan point wired before the ceiling closes

The details that decide whether an awning leaks

  • Fall of at least 5° set in the drawing, not eyeballed on site
  • Concealed box gutter in the front beam, downpipe inside the post
  • Flashing chased into the wall, then sealed. Silicone alone fails within two monsoons
  • Stainless fixings on glass, hot-dip galvanised steel or aluminium frames
  • Laminated glass over anywhere people stand, so a crack never becomes a shower of pieces

Does Eave install polycarbonate or zinc awnings?

No. We only install materials that still look right in ten years: laminated glass, 4 mm PVDF ACP, PU metal, aluminium louvres and cassette retractable awnings.
